The left side of the brain specialises in logical, linear, analytical processes and the right side specialises in intuitive, holistic, imaginative processes (gross simplification). The real power of the brain to tackle a task is unleashed when left and right brains work together simultaneously and synergistically. Today we have several generations of adults with low ability in these important skills which is a major problem. If parents, teachers and politicians worked on these intelligences within themselves, then these skills would diffuse to our children. Fortunately those of us interested in positive health (and consequently reading this magazine) are learning the wisdom of the ancient ones and the ancient traditions of the East and North America.

Residual confounding occurs when a risk factor has not been adequately adjusted for in the statistical analysis. The consequence is that the estimated association is not the same as the true effect. A value greater than 1 suggests an increased risk; a value equal to 1 suggests an equal risk; and a value less than one suggests a decreased risk. Physical defects present in a baby at birth that have significant medical, social or cosmetic consequences for the affected individual, and typically require medical intervention.

However, pregnant women are generally excluded from participation in these trials for ethical reasons. This means that there is a lack of randomised clinical data on the effects of the drug in human pregnancy. Non-clinical studies conducted in pregnant animal models which are used as a surrogate, are therefore important to investigate the effects of a drug in pregnancy. This type of data provides insights on the drug’s potential to interfere in human embryonic/fetal development because the mechanisms facilitating embryonic/fetal development are highly conserved through evolution and as a result there are many similarities between the response in the animal models and humans.
Additional Support Needs (ASN)This is a general term where a child needs extra help in some areas.See Developmental Delay, below. The LoveReading family exists because reading matters, and books change lives. Cheerleaders of authors and illustrators everywhere, the leading book recommendation websites now feature an online bookstore with social purpose where 25% of money spent can be donated to a school close to the buyer’s heart, or to schools in need. Schools across the nation use their LoveReading4Schools Portal to encourage reading for pleasure and fund new books, with £50,000 already donated to schools. Genetically-modified animals are produced by injecting the gene for the protein (which will act as the drug) into the nucleus of a fertilised animal egg cell. This is then implanted into an adult animal and as the animal develops, every cell will contain the drug-producing gene.
The data for diazepam, fosphenytoin, lorazepam, midazolam, thiopental sodium and stiripentol have not been reviewed given that the authorised indications for these antiepileptic drugs include status epilepticus, acute convulsions, refractory convulsive disorders or Dravet’s syndrome. For completeness, clinical data in relation to a number of other antiepileptic drugs less commonly used in the UK has also been reviewed; these include brivaracetam, clobazam, clonazepam, eslicarbazepine, ethosuximide, lacosamide, perampanel, primidone, rufinamide, tiagabine and vigabatrin. The restrictions to the use of valproate in girls or women followed a review of the available safety data including studies in animals and women who are pregnant.
- NICE guidance recommends that oxcarbazepine can be used first line for generalised tonic-clonic seizures and also as first line and adjunctive treatment for focal seizures.
- This comprises a two-sided cerebrum the so-called left and right brain linked by a massive bundle of nerves, the corpus callosum, comprising some 200 million fibres.
- As well as whether the drug is indicated for the treatment, prevention, mitigation, cure, relief, or diagnosis of that disease or condition.
- The phenomenon of true “genius” appears to come when many of these intelligences are well developed and used simultaneously.
- The largest studies are those by Christensen et al 2013 (386 children exposed to carbamazepine) and 2019 (423 children exposed to carbamazepine), which examined the risk of autism spectrum disorders and ADHD, respectively.

The protein produced from the gene is normally purified from the milk of the animal. This method has been used in goats to produce the drug antithrombin for treating people with defective blood clotting. Depression is a mood disorder which is thought to be caused, in part, by a lack of serotonin in the brain. Antidepressants have been developed to increase the levels of brain serotonin. A class of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) work by binding to serotonin reuptake proteins within synapses, blocking the proteins and preventing them from reabsorbing serotonin. Habituation is a kind of learned response where organisms learn to ignore unimportant stimuli (i.e. they know that they are not dangerous or do not offer any reward) after repeated exposure.
When this happens, the true link between exposure and outcome is distorted. cerebrumiq People may be placed in the wrong groups for different reasons including because of incomplete medical records, recording errors in medical records, or misinterpretation of records. Studies which assess trends in the occurrence, distribution or control of diseases or medical conditions in defined populations. A rare birth defect in where the baby’s skull doesn’t grow properly and their head becomes an unusual shape. A medical condition that is acquired by the fetus during pregnancy and is present at birth.
Congenital malformations were detected in 2 offspring (7.7%) exposed to zonisamide as part of polytherapy, so the role of zonisamide is unclear. In the study by Källén et al there were only 7 pregnancies exposed to zonisamide, of which 3 were exposed to zonisamide monotherapy; no congenital malformations were reported in any of these pregnancies. Data from non-clinical studies in rats published in the scientific literature reported some evidence of neurodegenerative changes in the brains of the offspring exposed during pregnancy (Glier et al 2004, Singh M, Mishra A., 2005, Hashish 2014). Limitations in the study designs, combined with conflicting findings in a Good Laboratory Practice compliant study in which there was no sign of degenerative changes in the brains of rat offspring means that there is no clear evidence of a potential for topiramate to adversely affect central nervous system development.
Although the risk was statistically significantly increased compared to the untreated control group, there was no difference compared with a levetiracetam exposed group and the available data for the latter does not appear to support an increased risk of fetal loss. Non-clinical studies in pregnant rats, rabbits, and mice report that exposure during pregnancy resulted in fetal malformations and these occur at plasma concentrations relevant to human therapeutic doses. The defects observed in animals are similar to those seen with fetal hydantoin syndrome. For topiramate, more recent data suggests the possibility of poorer development outcomes for children exposed during pregnancy and the possibility of a higher incidence of autistic spectrum disorder in children exposed to topiramate.
